‘Movies without songs is Body sans Soul’ by Maniratnam

Maniratnam, the unorthodox filmmaker of Indian film industry often jumps with new thoughts, but he never thinks off making a movie without songs. Be his initial stage of career with Ilayaraja or the present times with A.R Rahman, the songs have played vital roles in the success of his movie. Recently during a special occasion that witnessed coming together of Manirathnam and Rajiv Menon, the duo interacted on the prominence of songs in movies.

Rajiv Menon said, ‘I would admit that canning a song is tougher than making of a full length movie. The reason is that we need to bring whole lot of things together - visually, emotionally and so on.”

Manirathnam in turn added that having more songs in an album would be the best source of promotions for a movie. Songs are almost like starters that will pick everyone’s attention drawing them to theatres.

With the recent movies ‘Yuddham Sei, ‘Payanam’ and ‘Nadunissi Naaygal’ foraying with the new mantra of ‘No Songs’ formula, it looks like they’ll have reconsider about their ideas.
